The PIVOT Center
Policy and Innovation eValuation
in Orthopaedic Treatments
The Policy and Innovation eValuation in Orthopaedic Treatments (PIVOT) Center is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to maximizing treatment benefits while reducing the overall economic burden of musculoskeletal diseases. PIVOT investigators use innovative decision modeling that expands horizons beyond the limitations of traditional clinical trials. With these comprehensive modeling tools, PIVOT investigators are able to project long-term effects of disease and treatment on quality of life, life expectancy, and medical costs. The research conducted at the PIVOT Center will help policy makers prioritize future clinical research as well as guide clinicians in their efforts to reduce pain and disability and improve quality of life in persons with musculoskeletal conditions.
The PIVOT Center works in partnership with the Orthopaedic and Arthritis Center for Outcomes Research (OrACORe) to address policy and clinical questions related to musculoskeletal disorders. PIVOT is located in Brigham and Women’s Hospital, surrounded by a number of collaborating academic medical centers, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. PIVOT is led by director Elena Losina, PhD and clinical director Jeffrey N Katz, MD.
Mission
The mission of the PIVOT Center is to use multidisciplinary research methods to:
Optimize the delivery and practice of orthopaedics
Inform the development of new innovative procedures
Improve the clinical and economic value of existing procedures in persons with musculoskeletal conditions
